About me

I am a student with the Open College of the Arts, studying for a BA (Hons) Painting degree and currently doing the Drawing foundation course.

I love all kinds of art and enjoy visiting galleries. I have enjoyed drawing and painting over a number of years but very intermittently because of a busy work schedule. From time to time I have gone to study days or workshops and have loved attending a life class in Bakewell with Diane Kettle and have also done a a couple of online courses with Tara Leaver. I am quite well read and have taught a few short adult education classes.

In July 2016 I retired and this has given me the opportunity to be more focused and to develop my own practice and learning. Starting the OCA course, although daunting in some respects (will I be good enough, won’t other people be far better than me, can I really draw/paint)  fulfills a long term dream to undertake a programme which offers a structure to discover and develop my own style, skills and knowledge.

I am married to Helen and we live near Crewe, Cheshire. We have five adult children and six grandchildren who live in different parts of UK and Dublin. I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren aged from 2 – 8 yrs and  from whom I learn lots about drawing and painting and other crafty activities.

  1. I love this photo Ian, and also the happy featured sketch on your blog site. I remember how exciting it was when I got the same sort of box for Drawing 1: Drawing basics. Remember to have fun as you work through it, I forget to do that myself sometimes.

    1. Thanks Gwenyth. Yes that’s really important. I love art and I certainly don’t want it to become a burden. I’m new but finding it tricky at the moment to get a balance between sketching, drawing and reading.
