Workshop at Tate Liverpool

A great day with Paul Gatenby drawing from art.a) as a means of understanding and b) reinterpreting, finding a creative response. My first selection was by Matisse 1919. The Inattentive Reader. In drawing I became aware of the rather claustrophobic nature of the room in the painting with no window, the retrained colours and the woman’s gaze, seemingly beyond, to another place.

I also drew Dieter Roth 1973-76 Self Portrait at a Table a more complex image but the drawing helped with seeing more in the picture.
